The rain falls whether we will it or not. It has been falling long before we arrived and will continue long after we’re gone.
The umbrella—this simple arc of fabric and wire—doesn’t change the nature of rain. It doesn’t make the clouds disappear or convince the sky to withhold its waters.
What the umbrella does is create a small space of relationship with what is. It allows us to walk through the rain without being soaked, to experience the storm without being consumed by it.
We can hear the drumming on the canopy above us, feel the mist at the edges, watch the water cascade off the rim. We are in the rain, but not overwhelmed by it.
This is the practice itself—not the elimination of difficulty, but the cultivation of a different way of being with it.
Mindfulness doesn’t stop the mind from thinking, doesn’t prevent pain from arising, doesn’t make life’s challenges disappear. Like the umbrella, it offers us a way to be present with what’s happening without being swept away by it.
When we sit in meditation, when we pause and breathe, when we bring awareness to this moment, we’re not trying to control the weather of our experience.
We’re learning to carry our own umbrella—this capacity for spacious awareness that can hold whatever arises.
Rain and sunshine, joy and sorrow, ease and difficulty—all are welcomed into the vast sky of consciousness.
The umbrella is always here, always available. We simply need to remember to open it.
Cooking time!!!
Gluten-free pasta doesn’t have to be sad! Make an aggressive arugula pesto with way too much garlic and lemon, char some vegan patties until crispy, then toss everything together with good olive oil and that vegan Parm that actually tastes like something.

Summer cooking = minimal effort, maximum flavor, zero apologies for the ingredient swaps. The arugula’s peppery bite does all the heavy lifting here, and honestly? It’s better than the “real” version.
Today: Ask yourself what it might make more sense to accept than to fight?
